Konstruktio Lounge

This is my first-hand look into construction waste and how highly engineered/value materials are quickly disregarded from a single use to a single offcut.

“The summer of 2023 was spent helping on building sites labouring. Clearing sites was part of the job, and it was astounding what left the site in a skip destined for landfill. I distinctly remember one afternoon when I cleared 14 empty tonne bulk bags and had to take them to the skip; these bags were heavily engineered woven PVC designed to move one tonne of aggregates. However, once used on the site, they finished their life as a bag upon finding out from colleagues that builders’ merchants no longer took these bags back due to health and safety laws. The merchants said they used to take them back, but now they are considered a safety risk if they are torn or are beginning to wear. It is unsafe to unload via crane if it breaks and deploys the aggregates from a height. This provoked me to gather what bags I could and reimagine them in a different context. The extreme durability, especially after heat pressing, invited itself to become a durable fabric to upholster.”
